What is secondhand smoke?

Secondhand smoke refers to non-smokers passively inhaling a mixture of smoke exhaled by smokers and smoke produced by burning tobacco. It contains more than 7,000 chemical substances, of which at least 69 are carcinogens. This article will start from five aspects: definition, hazards, susceptible groups, protective measures and social initiatives to help readers fully understand the hazards of second-hand smoke and how to deal with it.

The composition and harm of second-hand smoke

What is secondhand smoke?

Secondhand smoke is caused bymainstream cigarettes(smoker exhales) andSidestream smoke(directly produced by tobacco burning), the concentration of toxic substances is even higher than that of first-hand smoke. The World Health Organization points out that long-term exposure to secondhand smoke can significantly increase the risk of lung cancer, cardiovascular disease and respiratory infections in children. Data show that approximately 1.2 million non-smokers die from second-hand smoke exposure every year around the world, of which more than one-third are children.

Susceptible groups and special scenarios

Pregnant women, children and patients with chronic diseases are particularly sensitive to secondhand smoke. Exposure to secondhand smoke in pregnant women may cause fetal growth retardation, and children may be prone to asthma and otitis media. In addition, in closed public places such as restaurants and cars, the concentration of secondhand smoke can reach 3-5 times the normal value due to insufficient ventilation. Research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that even brief exposure to high concentrations of secondhand smoke can increase platelet viscosity and induce the risk of blood clots.

Protective measures and policy support

Individuals can passStay away from smoking areas, use air purifiers and wear medical masks to reduce exposure risks. At the policy level, China's "Regulations on Smoking Control in Public Places" clearly prohibits smoking in indoor public places, and cities such as Beijing and Shanghai have implemented comprehensive smoke-free legislation. Some companies such asYuanda GroupproducedFFU air purifier(Model BPB-450-U1) can filter more than 90% of PM2.5 particles and has a certain protective effect against second-hand smoke.

Social governance and health initiatives

Eliminating second-hand smoke requires the cooperation of individuals, families and society. Smoke-free environments should be established in homes, and tobacco control law enforcement needs to be strengthened in public places. The International Union Against Cancer recommends adopting a "third-hand smoke" cleaning program and regularly cleaning curtains, carpets and other smoke-absorbing fabrics. Academician Zhong Nanshan once emphasized: "There is no safe exposure threshold for second-hand smoke, and the only effective protection is a 100% smoke-free environment." Through popular science education and policy improvement, the goal of universal health protection will be gradually achieved.
