HPV testing overview

HPV (human papillomavirus) testing is a medical examination used to screen whether the human body is infected with the HPV virus. It mainly targets high-risk HPV types (such as types 16 and 18), which are closely related to diseases such as cervical cancer. Detection methods include cervical cell sampling (such as TCT combined detection) or molecular biology methods (such as PCR technology). The core content is divided into three parts:Detection meaning(cancer prevention),Applicable people(mainly women who are sexually active) andTechnical methods(The accuracy of different testing products varies). Test results need to be combined with clinical diagnosis. A positive result does not mean disease, but regular follow-up is required.

The importance of HPV testing

What is HPV testing?

HPV infection is the main cause of cervical cancer, and about 99% of cervical cancer cases are related to persistent high-risk HPV infection. Through early detection, potential risks can be identified and intervention can be performed to reduce the incidence of cancer. The World Health Organization recommends that women over 30 years old undergo HPV screening every five years, and high-risk groups (such as those with low immunity) need to shorten the interval. The test can not only detect existing infections, but also assess the probability of cancer through typing (such as distinguishing type 16/18 from other types), providing a basis for subsequent treatment.

Technical methods for HPV detection

Current mainstream detection technologies includeHybrid capture method (HC2)andreal-time fluorescence PCR. HC2 can detect 13 types of high-risk HPV, but it cannot be typed; PCR technology is more sensitive and can accurately identify specific types (such as Cape Bio's HPV typing kit). Some new tests, such as the Cobas 4800 HPV Test (manufactured by Roche), have been approved by the FDA and can detect HPV and cervical cytology abnormalities at the same time. Sampling is usually performed by a doctor, using a special brush to collect exfoliated cervical cells. The process is painless and takes about 5 minutes to complete.

Interpretation of test results and precautions

HPV positivity needs to be judged based on TCT (cervical cytology) results: if TCT is normal, a reexamination is recommended in 6-12 months; if TCT is abnormal, further colposcopy biopsy is required. It is worth noting thatHPV infections are mostly temporary, 80% of infected people can clear the virus through their own immunity. Menstrual periods should be avoided before the test, and sexual intercourse or vaginal medication should be avoided within 24 hours. Currently, the domestically approved HPV testing products include BGI’s SeqHPV, Daan Gene’s HPV nucleic acid typing test, etc. The specific selection must be based on medical advice.

Summary and suggestions

HPV testing is a key means of secondary prevention of cervical cancer, but the results need to be viewed rationally: a negative test is not absolutely safe, and a positive test does not necessarily cause cancer. It is recommended that women over 25 years old include HPV testing in routine physical examinations and receive HPV vaccine (such as nine-valent vaccine) as primary prevention. Although detection technology continues to advance, clinical decision-making still needs to take into account factors such as age and medical history. Through standardized screening and health management, the incidence of cervical cancer can be significantly reduced.
